
York’s Universities and Colleges are situated in one of Yorkshire's most vibrant cities. It has a population of nearly 192,000 people.
The University of York has over 13,000 students and is set to grow rapidly over the next couple of years. York St Johns has over 6,000 students.
York University has 30 academic departments and is well known for its pioneering work in the field of science. The university is a 15 minute walk East from the city centre. A convenient and regular bus service, connects the university to the city and the suburbs. Recently York was named the 6th best research institution in the United Kingdom. There are eight colleges at the University of York, and every student is a member of a college, these are; Derwent, Langworth, Alculin, Vanbrugh, Goodrickie, Wentworth, James and Halifax. These colleges for part of your first year accommodation.
York St John University is located near the centre of York just off Lord Mayor's Walk. In 1990 York St Johns became a college of the University of Leeds. In February 2006, the College was granted the right to award degrees in its own name and the right to call itself a University College.
York city centre has all the usual high street brands as well as a wonderful range of small boutiques. York has many pubs and bars some of which are extremely popular with students and offer great value for money. There is also the large designer outlet to the South of the city which has a huge variety of shops with excellent discount prices.
There are only a couple of nightclubs but what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality! York is rich in cultural heritage, with breathtaking architecture - York Minster, ancient Romans ruins and contemporary art City Art Gallery.
Transport in York is really good, there is a superb bus service that services both universities. The transport to and from York is also excellent - it has one of the largest train stations and is on the East Coast line - this means London or Edinburgh in 2 hours. You can go to almost anywhere in the Great Britain from York - its ideal.
