
Newcastle is one of the most vibrant University cities in the UK. It has more clubs per square mile than anywhere in Europe, which makes for a highly entertaining University experience. It also houses the legendary BOAT nightclub, complete with revolving dance-floor. There are 50,000 students in the city, 20,000 of Newcastle and 30,000 Northumbria. In recent years there have been new clubs opening offering extremely modern and smart places to party.
The two main Universities - Newcastle and Northumbria - enjoy a fierce professional and sporting rivalry, thought that doesn't stop their respective students from getting on well together. The Stan Calvert Cup (Newcastle vs Northumbria) and the Boat Race (Newcastle vs Durham) are the sporting events of the year!
The University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne occupies a campus site close to Haymarket; it is renowned for its excellence in the field of medicine. It also ranks for most degrees in the top 10 or 20 in the UK. The university has some stunning buildings, the student union being one of the best. First year accommodation is found in a number of places. The most popular being Castle Leazes (catered) and Richardson (Ricky) Road (self-cater). Others include; Leazes Parade, Henderson Hall, Leazes Terrace, Marris House, St. Mary's College, Bowsden Court, Windsor Terrace and Magnet Court. Northumbria University is located near Haymarket also (to the East of the Civic Centre) in the centre of Newcastle. Northumbria offers over 500 courses through nine schools; most schools are in the Central Campus however some are out at the Coach Lane Campus (a few miles out of Newcastle) - don't worry there is a free shuttle bus to take you to and from there. Northumbria University used to be Newcastle Polytechnic until 1992 when it was given University status. Jonny Wilkinson is one of the alumni - England Rugby Team and The Newcastle Falcons. The beach is only 10 minutes away by bus, car or Metro. Whitley Bay is the ideal summer retreat; BBQs on the beach, Sea Life, Mini-Golf, Pubs, Fish n’ Chips etc... The historic market and University city of Durham is only 20 minutes away by train, bus or car.
Transport in Newcastle is excellent. The Metro system stops all over the city including, the Uni. Trains connect Newcastle with destination throughout the UK both north and South; it's just 3hrs to London. The Airport serves destinations all over the UK, Europe and the rest of the World. Newcastle to Bristol can be as little as £30 return!
Shopping in Newcastle is excellent all the major high-street brands can be found in Eldon Square. Just out side the city is the Gigantic Metro Centre, a vast shopping complex housing a wide variety of shops restaurants and entertainment such as LazerQuest, Bowling and an indoor arcade/theme park – there is even a roller coaster.
