LEEDS

Leeds is the capital city of Yorkshire and Humber with a population of 750,000 - the second largest of any Metropolitan District in England. Leeds attracts a wide and diverse range of students from the United Kingdom as well as a vast international community.

The city sprawls across the Yorkshire landscape, incorporating several areas of private student accommodation. There are a number of different areas within the boundaries of the city where students live, Headingley and Hyde Park being among the more popular.

There are two Universities in Leeds; the University of Leeds with 33,000 students and Leeds Metropolitan University with 39,000 students. There are also several colleges in Leeds Leeds College of Art and Design, Leeds Trinity & All Saints (2,600students), Leeds College of Music (the largest music college in the UK - 500 students), and Park Lane College Leeds (45,000 students!).

 

The University of Leeds is ranked in the top twenty UK Universities; it recieved the second most applications in 2006!! It is very popular with students for its trendy cosmopolitan image and high class degrees- Chelsy Davey being the newest recruit. There are over 700 degree programs to choose from with many being ranked in the top 10 in the UK. Business, Dentistry and Chemistry are among the highest ranked. The campus is about a mile north of the city centre and is within easy walking distance of Headingly - the popular student area to live. Leeds Uni has some of the best facilities for both work and sport; The Student Union is also second to non. Leeds Metropolitan University started life as Leeds Polytechnic; it gained University status in 1992. The Uni is split between Leeds and Harrogate. Its has two main campuses in Leeds; The Civic Quarter, located within Leeds city centre and The Headingly Campus in Beckett Park, Headingly. There are lots of options for first year accommodation - the uni offers over 3,500 rooms in a number of different locations. Living after that is left upto you mostly - Headingly is the obvious choice for most. (more info)

 

Leeds College of Art and Design has its main campus opposite Leeds University. It offers B.A. (Hons) degrees unlike some other art colleges - these degrees are from the University of Leeds. Some excellent artists have come out this Art College. (more info)

 

Leeds Trinity & All Saints is an accredited college of the University of Leeds offering degrees and diplomas in areas such as media, business, marketing, education, humanities, psychology and sport. The main campus is located in Horsforth, six miles from Leeds. This college is one of the top in the UK for finding a job after graduating with 98% of graduates being emplyed within 6 months of leaving! (more info)

 

Park Lane College Leeds is the largest further education college in Leeds. There are three campuses, Leeds City Centre, Horsforth and Keighley. Don't be fooled it also has over 40 other sites in Leeds. It signed a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ with Leeds Met Uni, and has developed over 21 foundation degrees in subjects such as Animal Health & Welfare, Contemporary Music Production and e-Technology. Leeds College of Music is located in Leeds’ Quarry Hill cultural quarter. It is the only college in the UK to offer both higher and furthur education courses. Degrees available are BA (Hons) in Jazz, Music, Popular Music Studies and Music Production. LCM has a large concert hall (The Venue); host to the annual Concert Season and many other performances. (more info)

 

The majority of the private sector housing is no further than a 15 minute's walk from Leeds University and Leeds Metropolitan University buildings. Leeds is a fantasticly vibrant city which offers some of the best shopping in the North of the country, especially those shops located in the arcade areas just off the main streets. The city also offers some great places to eat, with a very wide range of cuisines – something for everyone.

Leeds is also the clubbing capital of Yorkshire - students have a wealth of bars and clubs to choose from. With great student promotions there could be no better place to have a good time. Leeds has a total of six universities and colleges.
